Looking a bit closer at the magazine, I realise that I have a front-cover image as well! This is of a Snow Petrel, Antarctica's avian angel.
It has been a few years since I wrote for the magazine World Birdwatch. It was, however, impossible to resist an offer from editor Martin Fowlie to pen a piece honouring two of my ornithological heroes and former bosses: Josep del Hoyo (founder of Lynx Edicions, editor of Handbook of the Birds of the World) and Nigel Collar (Leventis Research Fellow, BirdLife International). The duo's most recent collaboration is a groundbreaking checklist of the world's birds. As my article sets out to demonstrate, this is both more interesting and more important than it sounds...
